The artist

ABOUT THE ARTIST

In panels, sculptures and objects, Norma Grinberg's creativity and innovation reflect in the space a trajectory of experience and aesthetic research.

The plastic artist is one of the biggest highlights in the ceramic sculpture work in the country.

With public and critical recognition - in Brazil and abroad - his works, several times awarded, emphasize originality and contemporaneity. Its aesthetic proposal is a language update, inspired by Concretism, Bauhaus and Minimalism, with the incorporation of the “installations” in vogue in Contemporary Art and its developments, as interventions in the architectural space.

The materials are diverse: reinforced mortar, iron, aluminum, sand, acrylic, plastics and others. However, it is with ceramics that the artist creates most of her works, seeking to rescue her aesthetic and artistic potential, as well as to transgress her limits.

Norma combines art and technique to create installations, sometimes build monumental sculptures, sometimes small forms of life in indoor and outdoor environments. We see this, respectively, in the Humanoids Installation - MAC, in the monument Lugar com Arco, in the gardens of ECA-USP, where he is a senior professor, and in the Cururus exhibited at MASP. Also part of his creations, objects with Jewish motifs.

TRAINING AND TEACHING ACTIVITIES

Naturalized and settled in São Paulo, Brazil since 1959, Norma Tenenholz Grinberg has been holding national and international exhibitions. As a visual artist, she is one of the greatest artistic highlights in ceramic work in the country. The quality of his work is recognized by the public and critics, who emphasize the originality and contemporaneity of his aesthetic proposal.

His academic background includes a Degree in Plastic Arts from Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado (FAAP), with a Master and Doctorate in Visual Poetics from the University of São Paulo (USP), where he is currently an undergraduate and graduate professor in the Department of Plastic Arts from the School of Communications and Arts (ECA-CAP-USP).
Since 2010 he is a member of the International Academy of Ceramics (IAC). based in Switzerland

Among other activities, Norma Grinberg develops research on ceramics as a means of artistic expression, being the coordinator of Grupo Terra, which investigates the “production of ceramic masses with different visual characteristics for use in small and large artistic works”. In addition, his conferences have sought to arouse reflection on the contemporary nature of artistic ceramics as a support and language in the most different areas of expertise.
In his Master's and Doctorate researches, research was developed, respectively, on the ceramic module in minimalist representations, and the approach of form and scale as a significant element in visual poetics.

On the occasion of his Masters, he carried out the installation Humanoids, at the Museum of Contemporary Art, in São Paulo. And, as a result of his research, in the Doctorate, he took the element Arco, already present in Humanoids, and deepened it in the thesis Lugar com Arco, which is why today there is an intervention work in the public space of the University of São Paulo . The work, which evokes ancestral references about the “Arch” as a construction and passage space, in this case takes on another aesthetic value, which is the monumental expansion of a ceramic piece, going through questions of adaptation and dialogue with areas such as Architecture and History.

Another theme that is always present in his reflections is ceramic making, in itself, with his considerations about visual poetics and the process of artistic creation that has as a backdrop the significant space of the studio.
His career has received awards and honorable mentions at events and exhibitions such as the I Salão Paulista de Arte Contemporânea, XXVI Brazilian Ceramics Congress, among others, in addition to invitations to international conferences and exhibitions such as the International du Film Ceramique Festival, in Montpellier, and Le Printemps des Potiers, in Bandol - France; 47th Concorso Internazionale Della Ceramica D'Arte, Faenza, and Galleria D'arte Ítalo-Brasiliana, in Milano - Italy; and at the Javits Convention Center, New York - USA, Neue keramik aus Brasilien, Brasiléia Foundation, Basel - Switzerland, among others. There are cases of events that approach ceramics in a more specific way, such as the Eleventh World Congress of Jewish Estudies, at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, where he presented the conference on “Creating Modern Jewish Art Objects in Brazil”.
